Trauma Therapy
& EMDR

Trauma Therapy in Gainesville, FL

Trauma is an emotional/physiological response to a distressing event. Trauma can impact several areas of a person’s wellbeing such as mental, emotional, physical, social, and spiritual. Trauma can be a one-time event, a prolonged event, or a series of events. Some examples of traumatic events may be emotional abuse, car accident, loss of a loved one, break up, natural disaster, experiencing racism/discrimination, sexual assault, and physical violence.

You may benefit from therapy for trauma if:

  • You feel numb and have difficulty experiencing positive emotions

  • You experience flashbacks or nightmares

  • Your body and mind feel stuck in a state of fear

  • You experience self-blame and shame about what happened

  • You feel the world is unsafe and you can’t trust anyone

I understand the importance of addressing trauma and helping individuals heal from their experience. Therapy can provide you with the tools and support you need to heal and move forward with your life. I value creating a safe, supportive environment where you can explore and process your trauma. You can let go of the negative feelings and beliefs that have been holding you back and create a more positive outlook on life. It’s time to rewrite your story and begin to live in the present.

EMDR Therapy

EMDR (Eye Movement Sensitization and Reprocessing) is a specialized type of therapy that helps people heal from trauma by reprocessing traumatic memories. EMDR is recognized as an evidence-based therapy to treat PTSD. EMDR shows that just like the body can heal from physical injuries, the mind can also recover from psychological trauma. In the case of a physical injury such as a cut, the body responds by closing the wound, but if there is a foreign object or repeated injury, the wound may become irritated and cause pain. Once the blockage is removed, the healing process can resume. Similarly, EMDR therapy shows that mental processes follow a similar pattern. The brain's natural information processing system tends towards mental health, but if it is obstructed or imbalanced due to a distressing event, the emotional wound may fester and result in severe distress. However, once the blockage is removed, the healing process can restart. EMDR activates the information processing part of the brain through bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements) to activate your natural healing process.
